"Fiction for the Real" Exhibition

The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo
Finished

Artists

Leiko Ikemura, Sophie Calle, Miwa Yanagi, Chihara Shiota
It is often said that art forms became diversified in the 1990s more than ever before. The scene was rather chaotic, reflecting upon the remarkable development in information technology as well as the dismantling of the Cold War world order of East vs West. How do artists react when the concept of "truth" has become ambiguous?

This exhibition features four female artists - Reiko Ikemura, Sophie Calle, Miwa Yanagi, and Chiharu Shiota. They all work in different media and have different approaches to the concept of the "real", and yet they apply fictional narratives which ultimately lead viewers to paradoxical discoveries.
