Shinzo Fukuhara et al.
Shinzo Fukuhara (1883-1948) was born in Ginza as the third son of Shisedo founder Arinobu Fukuhara. He studied Japanese painting and photography, and pharmaceutics in America. Even after he took over the management of Shiseido, he continued to practice photography, publishing 5 photo books and holding exhibitions at the Shiseido Gallery which he opened in 1919. As a businessman, he recognized the importance of advertising as conducted in the west and established a design department in 1916. He succeeded in projecting a "rich, smart, and modern" company image, which is carried on until today. Shinzo also produced packaging and advertisement designs for his company.

This exhibition focuses on Shinzo's achievement as a cultural figure in producing beauty and true richness of life in the rapidly shifting times of Taisho and Showa and explores the relationship of his works and Shiseido activities to art, life, and society.
