This artist paints a colorful, whimsical world full of layered patterns that evoke lost fairy tales. Her current body of work is based on her idea of "a nocturnal garden of triangular sunshine". In each of her pieces, she paints characters who play a part in this story by tempting us to unravel this mysterious tale. In her own words, Cristina describes parts of her narrative: "Minute Moon is in many ways a stand in for myself and she represents nighttime. She is a symbol for the joys of night such as moonlight, blankets, beds, dreams, lullabies... and how these joys function in a world of color and geometry..." There are "food creatures" living inside bellies making stories of their own and "wooden masks" that represent different spirits. The most powerful mask "Night Garden Spirit" can help the wearer to communicate with owls, lost roaming baby kittens, and other unknown nocturnal creatures and ghosts. The unique style Cristina has developed using contrasting, detailed patterns and vibrant colors can be traced back to the influence of her mother and grandmother, both seamstresses in Puerto Rico, who no doubt had piles of fabric in their homes. It shows a strong connection to her childhood and lures us into revisiting that innocent time when fables and myths could be true. Cristina Toro lives and works in a small town in Upstate New York where she saw snow for the first time in her life two years ago. She expands the stories of her imaginary worlds while surrounded by nature and solitude.
