Media: Painting

This exhibition is comprises new works from the artist's "Lighting Painting" series. This artist has continued to face the challenge of expressing the existence of light that is not actually there as painting. In this new revolutionary series light is not treated as subject matter, but represented abstractly as an object, a painting.

This artist, born in 1957 and graduated from Tokyo Geijutsu Daigaku, was based in Belgium for 10 years from 1996, but moved to Fukuyama City overlooking the Setonaikai Inland Sea from 2007. This change of surroundings is sure to lead to a new level of fulfillment and development of his expressive world. He held a solo exhibition at the Municipal Museum of Contemporary Art - Ghent (S.M.A.K.) in 2001 and the "Starry Paint" exhibition at Shugo Arts in autumn 2004 among other exhibitions all over the world. In the "Touching the Cosmos" group exhibition held at the Vangi Museum, his exhibition composition of enormous scale reaching from the ground to ceiling of the space completed his works. His atelier has also been introduced in "Architecture Notes No.3".

Shedding new light on Painting

Masato Kobayashi mixes painting with sculpture and installation to brilliant effect.

Japan Times Art Brief
By Edan Corkill

Masato Kobayashi has an unconventional view of the canvas. It's as if he has stumbled upon a roll of fabric, painted on it, and then nailed it or draped it haphazardly on pieces of wood ...
