The Department of Urushi-Art at the Tokyo University of Fine Arts and Music is now 120 years old. It conducts research on natural lacquer and generic varnishes.
This exhibition introduces works made with newly invented paints and also traditional Urushi, and presents at the same time research materials and methods. It explores various surface treatments in visual art, which have a long history. Traditions and new inventions - there are unknown possibilities for the researchers, whose work is also significant for the study of current environmental problems.
