"Forever Rouge" Exhibition

Visitors will enter the exhibition through a sequence of photographs by the well-known photographer Yoshihiko Ueda and though a short story by Mitsuyo Kakuta, a winner of Japan's prestigious Naoki Prize for literature.
The photography probes women's evolving relationship with lip rouge: the fascination of youthful first encounters, growing skills in using cosmetics as a means of self-expresion, self confidence engendered through skillfully applied dabs of rouge, the mature fulfillment of completing daily self portraits. The fiction, meanwhile, delves into the complex interplay of lip rouge and the female sensitivity. Underlying all the works is a keen awareness of the act of applying lip rouge as mental preparation: for the day ahead, for an important meeting, for a rendezvous.
Visitors will find on the second floor of the House of Shiseido's exhibition hall a historical retrospective of lip rouge. Among the exhibits will be Shiseido lip rouge products that span from the 1920s to recent years. To give context, there will be passages from world literature selected by Shigeru Kashima, a writer and leading interpreter of French literature. Kashima cites the works of Emile Zola, Andre Breton, Toson Shimazaki, Sakutaro Hagiwara and Katsue Kitazono in celebration of the act of "maquillage" and the use of lip rouge as essential accents in life.
Other historical articles from the Shiseido Corporate Museum collections include rouge palettes and rouge brushes of the late Edo period, Shiseido lipstick using wooden containers produced during wartime austerities, and Shiseido Lipstick Special "Coronet" & "Splendor" featured in newspaper advertisement celebrating the royal wedding of their Majesties the Emperor and Empress of Japan.
