SHUGOARTS is pleased to welcome back sound artist Yukio Fujimoto for his first solo exhibition in Tokyo in three years. Fresh from his successes at this year’s Venice Biennale, Fujimoto now unveils a collection of new work in “SILENT et LISTEN.”
An aural experience consists not merely of listening to sounds, but of also perceiving momentarily a world hidden below the everyday, which can not be captured by the eyes alone.
When you make works using sound you are as a matter of course tempted into the realm of the philosophical.
“SILENT et LISTEN” consists of works in which I have sought to give shape to my interest in that realm.
Yukio Fujimoto
“SILENT et LISTEN” is perhaps the perfect phrase for describing Fujimoto’s world of “sounds” and “words” fundamental elements that often escape the attention of visual artists. It comes from a memo left by Marcel Duchamp, and by showing up what is in fact an anagram, it neatly highlights the rarely noticed but deep connection that exists between these two ideas.
Yukio Fujimoto has established an international reputation with art that often makes visitors aware of the very mechanics of human perception and understanding. He represented his country at the Venice Biennale in 2001, and is currently included in this year’s International Art Exhibition. This year he has also held solo shows at the Hiroshima City Museum of Contemporary Art, The National Museum of Art, Osaka, and other venues.
