This exhibition is the culmination of a series of paintings done over the past two years and focuses on the statues and altars found in Buddhist temples. The artist became interested in the layout and arrangement of the statues and paraphernalia associated with Buddhist worship - the lotuses, lamps, candlesticks, ritualistic tools and offerings - assembled like a giant still-life. The paintings on display in this exhibition are done in acrylic and Indian ink. In each work the artist has attempted to create a totality in which all the elements work together to become a 'whole' - not a sum of parts, but a fusion of form, colour, light and texture. Also, he attempted to evoke the atmosphere of the temple interior - on the one hand, dramatic and awe-inspiring, while on the other, intimate and profoundly spiritual. The title "Honzon" roughly translates into English as 'principal image of devotion' - with each temple being dedicated to a particular god, the 'honzon', or main object of veneration. Several of those gods are represented here.
