Celebrating the 120th anniversary of the Tokyo University of Fine Arts and Music, this exhibition looks back on the history and the future of "Western Painting" in Japanese culture.
Kiyoteru Kuroda, after coming back from Paris, became a leading figure in the department of Western Painting, and also established the art organization "Hakuba-Kai". Later, painters started to seek out avant-garde expressions and philosophies and headed to Paris following the International Exhibition held there in 1900. The movement had a huge influence on the Western-style painting scene in Japan. Eisaku Wada and Chu Asai came back from studying in Paris and focused on educating younger artists. Takeshi Fujishima, Ryuzaburo Umehara, and Sotaro Yasui started experimented with combining Japanese traditions into Western style. After the 1920s, artists including Tsuguharu Fujita came to explore both internationalism and individualism, and the legacy of their experiments and challenges continue today. From Meiji to Heisei, this exhibition traces the dreams of painters who practiced in Paris.
