Yukihisa Isobe
Born in 1935, Yukihisa Isobe has in recent years been producing works that explore the relationship between changes that have taken place in the natural environment and regional societies. Despite his broad-ranging activities, this solo exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo is his first.

In the 1960s, Isobe was critically acclaimed as an artist who bridged the gap between the abstraction of the 1950s and the Pop Art of the 1960s with his prints that featured Wappen coat of arms as a recurring motif and his multilayered paintings that made reference to classical works. However, in the late 1960s, after he moved to the United States, he became involved in the field of environmental planning and has remained a pioneer in it until this day; it was a progression that allowed him to take his interest in the natural environment and invest it in activities on a larger scale.

This exhibition explores the notion of "landscape" in Isobe's works, which the artist makes by incorporating the environment that surrounds him. By displaying documentary material, the show also aims to shed light on the "happenings" that took place in New York, creating a shift in the relationship between communities and the natural environment. The centrepiece of the exhibition will be a reconstruction of the artist's "Air Dome" that he created for the 1st Earth Day in 1970, shown together with film footage from the time. This exhibition provides people with an opportunity to think relatively about art and expression in contemporary society.
