What comes to your mind when you hear the words “theme” or “material”? At the Hara Museum, viewers may see works by a variety of artists who are active today, works that encompass a wide spectrum of backgrounds and modes of expression.

"Creation and the Creative Mind: Selections from the Hara Museum’s Permanent Collection" invites you to savor the different ways artists approach art by showcasing works that illustrate the wide range of methods used and diverse ways the urge to create is manifested.

Fusako Yusaki is one of leading figures in the area of claymation, which is a form of animation in which movement is recorded by moving and filming clay figures one frame at a time. The video works that result in her case are humorous and rhythmical and filled with warmth. On the other hand, works by Karel Appel, Christian Boltanski, and others deal with war, conflict and other negative social phenomena, works which are suggestive of the artists’ strong stance against their recurrence. The interior designer Shiro Kuramata created furniture and spaces inspired by dreams and memories. He incorporated revolutionary techniques in his design works and influenced later generations of designers with his rare aesthetic sensibility. Zaha Hadid, the world renowned architect and first female recipient of the Pritzker Architecture Prize, has created a chair in the image of a soft piece of cloth that has fluttered down to earth. Given the fluidity and sense of floating that characterizes her architectural designs, one might say the chair is “Zaha-esque.”

Through this exhibition, the organizers hope viewers will enjoy the fascination of contemporary art, as well as its depth.
