Yasumasa Morimura

Yasumasa Morimura works in wide range of media such as photography, performance, film, and theater. He is well known for his self portrait series in which he inserts himself into Vincent van Gogh's self portrait, or Cézanne's still-life paintings. Born in 1951 in Osaka, Morimura studied at the Kyoto City University of Arts, and in 1988, he was in the International Venice Biennale: d'APERT utto in 1988. He is one of today's most highly recognized contemporary artists.

For this exhibition, the museum gallery space is transformed into an academic setting, mainly presenting about 80 pieces from the "Art History Series" including his versions of Vermeer, Cézanne, van Gogh, and Goya, displayed as though a class is being held. During the exhibition period, related events entitled "after school activities" or "homeroom discussions" have also been scheduled. In the final event, titled "After School Screening", Morimura will present his performance videos including his most recent work.
