Buncho Tani, the master of Edo popular art in the 19th century, created his own artistic style through explorations of Japanese and Chinese painting styles such as Nan-ga (Southern school of Chinese painting), nature paintings and ink paintings. He also oversaw the development of many disciples and established a school that became the largest among the Edo populace in contrast to the shogunate artist, the Kanou School family. He was active as a central figure in the Edo art world alongside such masters as Houitsu Sakai and Katsushika Hokusai. Although his and his disciples' work is essential in discussing Edo art, research into this subject is still underdeveloped.
This exhibition traces the transformation that the Buncho school underwent during the 19th century Edo era and how it influenced Edo art. Buncho's disciples' works will be on display for the first time to take a closer look at the role that he played.
