"Japanese Film Actress - from the NFC Still Photo Collection -" Exhibition

National Film Archive of Japan
Finished
The first movie directed by a Japanese person was released in 1899. In 1908, a movie production studio opened and the Japanese movie industry started to come together. However, it was still ten years after that when actresses started to appear in the field, which was dominated by Kabuki actors and new actors acting females. Around 1920, the breakthrough for actresses in the film industry was ushered in by the progressive movement led by new film production companies such as Shochiku, as well as the influence of foreign movies, and the emergence of actresses onscreen symbolized a new age for the film industry. This exhibition consists of three parts including bromide silver prints from the museum collection.
