Ai Yamaguchi depicts underage prostitutes back in the late Edo period, using unusual supports for her paintings. The stories take place at a teashop in the middle of the mountains, where those girls have been left to themselves. The isolated world is small and limited for them. Having pure minds, whatever they find or see expands into fantastical visions. Even feelings of jealousy and anxiety are expressed beautifully, incorporating the peaceful scent of the changing seasons, the elegant patterns of kimono or verses of waka poetry.
For this exhibition, Yamaguchi got his inspiration from the historical landmark "Meguro's Mt. Fuji", which used to be located in the Meguro area. The paintings depict an imaginary Mt. Fuji and girls fantasizing about seeing the mountain. The white and rounded canvases hint at the natural landscapes of early spring where piles of snow remain on the ground. In contrast, the blackness of the girls' long hair runs across the canvas as though depicting a mountain trail. The show is titled "Yama (mountain), haruru (clear view)", to give the impression of the spring fog clearing from one's view of a landscape, the point at which one can make a wish.
