Artists

Alfred Wallis, Ben Nicholson, Christopher Wood
Born in Cornwall, U.K., Alfred Wollis (1855-1942) is a self-taught artist who started painting after he turned 70 years old. His emergence in the art world happened coincidentally when painters Ben Nicholson and Christopher Wood saw Wollis' paintings hanging in his house as they were walking by. These paintings are of sailing ships and landscapes by the ocean, made with body paint for boats as well as oil paints on wood panels and cardboard pieces. They are experimental and filled with elements that are rarely seen in the major art scene. This exhibition consists of 80 paintings and drawings by Wallis, and 10 pieces by Nicholson and Wood, as well as other artifacts relating to his life.
