Seiji Togo "Atelier of the Showa"

Seiji Togo
In the postwar period, images of female figures created by Seiji Togo often decorated department store walls and packaging for sweets, adding a pleasant feeling to Japaneses cities recovering their liveliness. Cups and sewing sets with his illustrations can be found in many households even today.

Togo established his popular female images in the early Showa period. Before then he was exploring futurism and Dada expressionism, but he changed his style dramatically when he encountered classical paintings at the Louvre Museum and was inspired by Parisian lifestyle during his stay.

Despite Togo's enormous popularity, there is little analysis of his artistic expression. The sweet and romantic style that he developed was in conflict with the ideas carried by the Nika-kai critics who advocated for the modernist establishment.

This exhibition entitled "Atelier of the Showa" takes a close look at his creative process through his works, photographs, and items that he left. Photographs of his studio, works in progress, and documents tell us his viewpoints and inspirations for the stylish female figures.
