Various sculptural expressions can be found in traditional Japanese culture. Aside from Buddhist statues, statues of deities, architectural decorations, and other crafted objects, "sculpture" from a Western point of view was introduced into Japanese culture in the 1890s, even later than then"kaiga" (a term referring to western painting) was introduced. Around that time, "Netsuke," a miniature carved object used to hold personal belongings, and ivory carvings, became popular in certain markets abroad. Also, monumental sculptures gained recognition, and individual sculptors started to be recognized in the early 20th century.

Later, a greater variety of ideas was introduced as concepts of modern European art merged with the Japanese art scene. In addition, changes occurred in the field of traditional Japanese woodcarving. In the post-war period, abstract expressions began to appear and evolved into various forms.

This exhibition gives an overview of the history of Japanese sculpture from the late 19th century to the 1960s, introducing around 100 sculptures by 68 artists, concerning what "modernity" means in the context of Japanese sculpture. Compared to the history of painting, there have not been enough opportunities to examine Japanese sculpture in the modern era. This exhibition aims to raise people's awareness of this subject and to spread the beauty of sculpture.
