Herr Schobel
Nakaochiai Gallery is pleased to present the work of artist Herr Schobel at the exhibition ‘Gelobtes Land’. Although born in Austria, Schobel has been working in Berlin since 2000, on his latest series of work—in collaboration with partner Claudia Rohrmoser—drawing connections between ideas of homeland, tradition and the self. The gallery will show a selection from Schobel’s latest works, primarily video, but also including 2D work and products. The work asks such questions as, how does the meaning of an individual’s homeland change after years of living outside one’s own country? How do individuals living outside the country of their birth see their cultural traditions change as a result of globalization and assimilation?

Schobel explores these ideas through work that is at once dramatic and humorous, inspired by horror films and traditional folk kitsch. His video is a montage bringing together symbolic rituals, religious icons, textures in nature, comic books, spiritual hunger, treachery, and the corruption of modern society.
