Hiroya Nakata "Movie Still"

Artists

Hiroya Nakata
The artist's concept is to create photographic stills or "movie stills" from a fictitious film. The aim of the series is to deliberately create "sentimental" feelings (a combination of emotions that can barely be expressed in words) that one can catch glimpses of, for example, between film scenes. The series also seeks to provoke discussion about "stories" by highlighting the illusion-promoting aspect of films, which are mostly fictional.

In this exhibition, photographs chosen from two series and the portfolio of the entire series will be on display. Each of the "Movie Still" series are encased in two files and presented with the fictitious film plots that they are based on. These series are "Popstar" (2006) and "An Author's Death (Nested)" (2007). Popstar is about a blank letter that reaches a man and the story surrounding the letter. In "An Author's Death", the author Ito's protagonist artist dies mysteriously while the story is unfinished, as does Ito.
