Artists

Kae Higuchi
Following the success of her first solo exhibition at Nishimura Gallery, up and coming artist Kae Higuchi will exhibit 15 new works.

Higuchi was born in 1975 in Sendai, and graduated from Tohoku Seikatsu Bunka College in 1997. She captures unguarded moments of children with a mixture of tempera and oil paints. Based in Sendai, Higuchi was featured in the "N.E.Blood 21" Exhibition at Rias Ark Museum of Art in 2005, which led to a solo exhibition at Nishimura Gallery, where her paintings of innocent and lovable children started to draw attention from all over the country. Since then, she has exhibited at Hokkaido Museum of Modern Art, Miyagi Prefectural Museum, and the VOCA Exhibition at Ueno Royal Museum. She has received numerous prizes, including the Miyagi Prefectural Arts Award, and the Ohara Museum Award.

Small black eyes and open mouths are characteristic of Higuchi's children, who have a vacant look deep within their cuteness. Her images are a mental landscape that can be shared by anybody, and evoke familiarity and unease at the same time.
