Dealing with issues of urban space, this exhibition allows viewers to become familiar with or rediscover the work of these photographers. All of them share Paris as their base, scrutinizing it intensely in their photographs, and through their wanderings, be it by day or by night, a certain urban poetry has emerged out of their work. This exhibition brings out each photographer's individual attitude towards urban space (depicting buildings, monuments, streets, neighbourhoods, squares, boulevards and so on) to produce a fragmentary and subjective portrait of Paris in the 20th century.

The work on display presents the city to us as a photographed object, but also allows us to appreciate it as a living organism. The city's space - a second, man-made natural environment - comes across as a continuous series of changes. Most of the images show the rhythm of urban life, its cycles and fluctuations and the relationship between people and their surroundings. In this situational photography, where occurrences and narration remain in suspense, man is not the main subject: he is just a factor in structuring an environment much larger than himself, one body within a larger body.
