The Mezzotint ("the halfway tone" in Italian) technique is called manière noir in French and is characterized by the black velvety surface that the works have. This technique was invented in the 17th century and has been used for a long time to reproduce oil paintings, but its high level of artistry has been revisited in the 20th century. Yozo Hamguchi, who was one of the pioneers in this movement, added color to the mezzotint technique and created his original color mezzotint technique. This technique came to be acclaimed highly internationally and largely influenced the development of Mezzotint prints. In this exhibition, Mezzotint prints by 7 artists from the museum's print collection will be introduced.
