Master Cinematographers of Japan Part 2

This event has ended.
At National Film Center
Media: Film

Films are created not only by directors and actors, but through a combined effort and creativity of many staff. The role of the cinematographer, who 'frames' the world in various ways using film and cameras to create an entirely new 'world', is especially significant in the filmmaking process. Their job of handling equipment, choosing the lens and film, collaborations with the artistic director and lighting staff, making decisions regarding framing and structuring, controlling how the image looks and so on, affect the core of films. As well, cameramen are important leaders at the set, as they are required to bring the director's ideas to life.

This "Master Cinematographers of Japan" series began in 2004 to shed light on the work of cinematographers. This second installment features the works of 18 cinematographers who debuted in the era of silent films, and went on to contribute to the rise of the Japanese film industry. The event aims to offer a new perspective of Japanese films by following the careers of these 'magicians of light' who worked at large movie companies such as Shochiku, Nikkatsu and P.C.L., experiencing the growth of the industry, the shift to colour, and the expansion of technology.
