"Machi-Yatai Project" Exhibition

The School of Architecture at Tokyo National University of Fine Arts & Music presents the "Machi-Yatai Project" in which it locates temporary spaces and facilities to transform parts of daily scenery in Taito Ward. This project takes place around the alley right by Taninaka Gyokurin Temple, taking "spiritual purification" as its theme. They aim to suggest a new concept of space by corresponding with, and sometimes contrasting the context of the original site.

The zone from the Taninaka area to the road approaching Gyokurin Temple suggests "here = this world" while the vacant space on the other side of the road suggests "over there = the world after death"; the alley connecting those two can be seen as "a path for purification". Each of the sections has its own purposes and meanings, referring to the "six virtues for enlightenment" as practiced in Buddhism.

This whole process of experiencing the walk is a metaphor for "spiritual purification - enlightenment". The "Machi-Yatai Project" proposes a new form of interactive space involving people and the environment.
