Masayasu Mitsuke

Masayasu Mitsuke was born in Kaga City, Ishikawa, where he continues to live and work. He studied Kutani ceramic at the Ishikawa prefectural studio and later learned "Akae," the traditional technique of decorating porcelain which uses iron oxide for color, from Buzan Fukushima in Kutani.

Akae was originated in China during the Song Dynasty. After being introduced to Japan, the technique was further developed in Imari, Kyoto, and Kutani. Mitsuke uses the traditional Akae style in depicting human figures, flowers, and birds, adding detailed, unique patterns.

Mitsuke also applies traditional patterns called Yoraku and Shippoumon in part, creating a completely original image in the end. His unique style appears most strikingly in his Ozara, large plates.

This exhibition features four large plates, two pieces of lidded pottery, and one flower vase.
