TAB イベント - 山本秀夫 「断面A-A 」

The cross-sectional diagram seems to be a kind of secret code to everybody who doesn’t have to deal with design, engineering or technical drawings in general.
To imagine a cut across an object and the way it looks then requires training and maybe a certain degree of visual-spatial thinking.
If you are not used to it at all, it could be difficult to understand such drawings. Therefore at the beginning of the exhibition this way of visualization is introduced by the simple example of an apple. Almost everybody has experience in cutting an apple in half and has recognized the different patterns of the seeds depending whether you have cut lengthwise or across.
Like this, in the following you will find at almost every exhibited the work of Hideo Yamamoto a small line, marked by A-A. This line indicates the cut. Turn the object in your mind by 90 degree around the axis of this line and then look at the drawing pictured on the wall.
Even if you are not so involved in drafting - with a bit of effort - you can enjoy the revealing of some hidden detail like how the shell of the wooden toy-turtle is fixed; or the beauty of the curve discovered in washbasin; or the challenge to solve the riddle of a complex structure like in the case of the humidifier; or guess the haptic feeling of the teacup’s handle…

I appreciate to explain design apart from styling on the surface. In its literal sense, this exhibition focuses on the ‘inner values’ of design.
And there are many facets of ‘inner values’ in design. I am looking forward to ideas to display them like the concept of “Cross Section A_A” does.
