Artists

Toko Sakamoto
Toko Sakamoto weaves works are made of Tegusu, a kind of silk. The time and labor devoted to the creation of these works are visible to the viewer, carrying a kind of message that cannot be put in words.

In 2005, Sakamoto's work changed significantly. She took her personal diary, scanned all the pages and the transfered data was used to create embroidery automatically with a sewing machine. The originally hand-written text completely lost its organic features after the machine changed it into marks. Sakamoto's work implies a process of objective self-viewing that she undertakes to sort out her daily life.

In this exhibition, Sakamoto presents an installation consisting of pieces of underwear and handkerchiefs with embroidery from her diary.
