Saigyo, Sotatsu Tawaraya

Priest Saigyo is often portrayed as a legendary wandering Buddhist poet-monk. Today, only three genuine pieces by Priest Saigyo are known, but there are kohitsu (copies in full, with detached segments of poetry compilations, etc.) left in the so-called “Saigyo style” of elegant and sharp calligraphy attributed to this wayfaring priest. In this show, through the kohitsu attributed to Saigyo and also those from the same time, we will try to unveil the characteristics of the period during which Saigyo lived and the poetic activity of the people who surrounded him. Also, by displaying the Saigyo Monogatari Emaki (Illustrated Stories of Saigyo) and other paintings, Saigyo’s itinerant life will be surveyed.
