Kenkichi Tomitomo
This exhibition celebrates the 120th anniversary of the birth of Kenkichi Tomitomo, a master of contemporary pottery.

Tomomitomo was born in Nara Prefecture and studied architecture and interior decorating at Tokyo School of Arts (now Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music) before moving to England to continue his education, where he was inspired by William Morris and Whistler. Back in Japan, he opened a workshop in his hometown of Ando in Nara, and started his career. In 1926, he moved to Chitose in Tokyo and mastered multicolored overglaze painting for ceramics. After the war, he moved to Tokyo, exploring new styles with gold and silver. In 1955, he was deemed a Living National Treasure.

250 ceramics fired in various styles, sketches and letters from London, handmade woodblock prints and bound books, and other reference materials will be on display to explore the whole of Kenkichi Tomitomo, who sought the perfect combination of functionality and beauty in crafts for over fifty years.
