Artists

Bernard Leach
Bernard Leach (1887-1979) is a famous British potter from the 20th century. This exhibition introduces him not only as a potter, but also as an artist who seriously dealt with the idea of creation in relation to daily life.

He spent 10 years in Japan, where he came into contact with members of the "Shirakaba" group led by Soetsu Yanagi. Through them he became to be involved in philosophical ideas of creating art within the context of daily life.

Leach's explored his philosophical ideas in his furniture designs, and this carried on later in his career back in England where he engaged in making bowls, tiles, and interior design. This exhibition presents a total of 130 pieces of ceramic, etching, drawing, and furniture pieces introducing the development and shifts of his ideas about life and art.

Please check the museum's website for details on lectures and workshop. (Japanese only)
