Orie Terada + Emma Leach "Table Manner(s)"

Gallery Satoru
Finished

Artists

Orie Terada, Emma Leach
In March 2007, Emma Leach did a performance called "Underground Tea Ceremony". In the performance she took a tea set on the London Underground, and was taught the etiquette of British Tea Ceremony from a tea expert. This is based on her interest in the idea of a set of rules that are unspoken in society at large. The idea also comes from her childhood experience of uncomfortable visits to her grandmother's house.

Orie Terada calls her work "Onigiri Performance", She makes Onigiri (rice balls) to give people on the street in different countries, documenting her encounters with video footages and photography. It is based on communications mediated by food-an important part of culture for each society.

These two artists are presenting a collaborative performance in the gallery space.

Events:
"Tea Ceremony Emma in London, Orie in Tokyo"
December 8th (Sat.)17:00- performance via Skype

''ENCHA'' December 23rd (Sun.) 14:00-16:00
Tea service by Naomi Oshimi & Junko Motoyasu

''Tea Ceremony Emma and Orie in Kichijoji''
December 27th (Thu.) last day 14:00- performance at Gallery
The performance came from the coincidence that Emma and Orie chose the shared theme "Tea Ceremony" for each work. Video calling allows them to do this performance with the distance between England and Japan. They will perform "Tea Ceremony" with each facing a computer screen and web cam, following manners of each country. Systems and orders will come into the online communication, and the time difference, distance, and the cultural difference will become apparent.
