"Le Corbusier: Firminy Church - Miracle of Light" Exhibition

Galerie Taisei
Finished
Last fall, the completion of a building designed by Le Corbusier made the news: the construction of the Church of Saint-Pierre in Firminy in central France that Le Corbusier had designed in his later years had been interrupted. However, construction was restarted in response to a long movement to complete this project, and the church was completed in 2006.

The aim of this exhibition is not simply to introduce the image of this newly finished church, but there will also be an exposé of the 50-year process and history of completing this church. Under the overarching theme "Miracle of Light," Le Corbusier's Church of Firminy will be explained in detail through plans, photographs, and models. Professor Shoichiro Sendai of Hiroshima University who supervised the curation of this exhibit is one of the foremost experts on Le Corbusier and this church.

Exhibition Content:
1. Introduction of light trajectory (24-hour solar trajectory and cross-sectional plan)
2. The road to perpendicularity; changes in the project; Le Corbusier's plan, corrections and the final plan (models, photographs, text)
3. The meaning of light and polychromy, comparison to interior lighting of the Hagia Sophia, and the chapels of Le Couvent de La Tourette and Notre Dame du Haut
4. On the authenticity of the architecture, final images by Le Corbusier
