This photographer was born in 1944 in Stockholm, Sweden and studied photography under Christer Strömholm from 1966 to 1968. He is known for documentary style works such as "Café Lehmitz" that portrays Hamburg's nightlife, "Fängelse" shot while living in a prison long term and "Ingen har sett allt" that features psychiatric patients as the subjects.
The series "Café Lehmitz" is a starting point of sorts for this artist who experienced culture shock at the age of 18 when he encountered prostitutes, alcoholics, drug addicts and cross dressers in the German city of Hamburg where he started traveling. He returned to the city after studying photography and photographed the nightlife for two years, always from the perspective of a family member watching over rather than a journalist. The photographs were published as a collection 8 years later and his work "Lilly and Rose" was used as the cover of Tom Waits' album "Rain Dogs".
The artist returned to Hamburg 30 years later and came to a realization after being confronted with the transformed modern city. He is always asking who he is and why he takes pictures, despite the fact that the answer changes depending on the time or circumstance. Showing "Café Lehmitz" again can be called another start for the artist, who continually revisits the meaning of his existence.
