"Overview of the History of Ukiyo-e for Families Vol. 1: The Birth of Ukiyo-e" Exhibition

Ota Memorial Museum of Art
Finished
Ukiyo-e prints are representative of the original Japanese culture of the Edo period. They are very popular internationally, and Ukiyo-e artists such as Maro Kitagawa, Hokusai Katsushika, and Hiroshige Utagawa are commonly known names that you can find in textbooks. But, when you are asked to describe Ukiyo-e, or to give an introduction to the history of Ukiyo-e, you might find it difficult to explain.

This exhibition is the first in the series "Overview of History of Ukiyo-e for Families", focusing on the origin of Ukiyo-e, tracing its history from the beginning of Ukiyo-e to the birth of multi-colored woodblock prints called Nishiki-e. It is a great opportunity for Ukiyo-e beginners, and even elementary and junior high school students who are not quite familiar with Ukiyo-e.
