"Chaplin Meets Japan: From the Collection of Toraichi Kono, Charles Chaplin's Secretary" Exhibition

National Film Archive of Japan
Finished
It has been 30 years since the king of comedy, Charles Chaplin (1889-1977) passed away. His films are highly appreciated by audiences around the world, but the fact that his secretary was Japanese is not commonly known. Between 1916 and 1934, Toraichi Kono (1885-1971) served as Chaplin's right-hand man and supported Chaplin as he grew to become a leader of the comedy film industry.

Last spring in Kyoto, an exhibition titled "Chaplin's Japan" was held that introduced recently found articles left by Kono. These articles are on display along with related artifacts from the Film Center's collection to review the relationship between Chaplin and Japan, and the history of the reception of his films in Japan.
