Flowers "Paradise" Dance Performance

Hara Museum of Contemporary Art (Tokyo)
Finished

Artists

Yumi Yoshimoto, Makoto Matsushita et al.
Led by Yumi Yoshimoto, the troupe "flowers" has a cast that changes with each performance. Not confined to the conventional theater, the troupe turns any place of their liking into a stage.

The keywords for this performance are “place” and “memory.” “Borrowing” scenery from the Hara Museum’s garden and building, Yumi Yoshimoto and co-star Makoto Matsushima interweave dance with the sound of the violin played by Naoki Kita, with lighting provided by Yasuko Abe, whose design was conceived as an answer to the question: how to express memory in the form of light?

Costume designer Izumi Nakata plays the role of go-between which links the dance to the place. In this performance, a given “place” in the everyday landscape is temporarily cut out to create a denser space. As the performance proceeds, that “place” is restored to the landscape, returning the landscape to its previous look by the end. The influence of the past, however, remains in our minds as a “memory.” For Yoshimoto, the title "Paradise" refers to a state in which fortune and misfortune, happiness and unhappiness are accepted. It is a word that encapsulates her activities in recent years.
