This event has ended.

21_21 Design Sight marks its opening with the special program 'Tadao Ando Construction Site 2006 “A Hard-Fought Process”'. The program is mainly about getting people to experience the space - by opening the just-completed building to the public before 21_21’s first exhibition - and presenting the design process from start to finish through architectural models, photographs, and drawings.

In designing the stage for 21_21 Design Sight, architect Tadao Ando endeavored to create the kind of architecture he sees as “the face of Japan”. The building has two levels, one above and one below ground, and houses two galleries - one large, one small. As most of the interior space lies underground, the dramatic change from quietly balanced exterior to dynamic interior is something that has to be experienced.

Signature Ando: A Look at 21_21 Design Sight

For the love of concrete, they came. To lay hands on it, caress it, feel its cool exposed indifference; to pit their body's strength against it and inevitably lose. These are the crowds for the opening of 21_21 Design Sight in Roppongi's Tokyo Midtown complex.

Overall, interesting exhibition (with bilingual captions on all works). But one has to wonder why a museum's opening exhibition would be about... its own construction... At best, that kind of exhibition usually gets shown for free in a room adjacent to the main opening exhibition...

Photographers, be aware, it seems the museum doesn't like people who enjoy the museum's design and apparently they don't need the free PR they could get by letting us share pics of it on the web... Beats me...

More shots of the museum and current exhibition, see Jean Snow's pics:

荒削りなメモが走る現場図面やラフスタディ模型、詳細検討模型が大量に展示され、案の変遷がよく分かるとともに設計にかける膨大なエネルギー、スピード感が伝わってくる、非常に緊張感のある展示になっていました。
