Marc Chagall "Dead Souls"
This event has ended.
At Machida City Museum of Graphic Arts
Media: Prints, Art Talk
In 1922 the twentieth-century painter and printmaker Marc Chagall (1887-1985) started a life moving among cities such as Berlin and Paris in order to escape from post-revolutionary Russia. It was during this time that he studied etching techniques and "Dead Souls" was his first collection of works. Chagall's love for his native country and nostalgic sentiments infuse these copperplate engravings for which he chose "Dead Souls," written by the Russian author Gogol (1809-1862) whom he held in esteem. "Dead Souls" is a collection of monochromatic copperplate engravings. Although they are not multicolor prints as his later woodblock print collections were, the highly varied scene compositions and fine motifs adrift in tenderness that are unique to Chagall's prints appear in these works. Major works on display are Chagall's complete 96 copperplate engraving prints that he created to illustrate the Russian author Gogol's unfinished story "Dead Souls". This exhibition will not circulate in other galleries.
