21_21 Design Sight will be hosting a summer program called "Lucky Luck Show" that will focus on traditional performance arts such as rakugo (traditional comic storytelling) and kyogen (traditional comic theater).
21_21 Design Sight wants to recognize these long-cherished and traditional Japanese performance arts. They are "arts that entertain and surprise audiences while portraying uniquely Japanese perspectives on people and lifestyles." In this sense these two traditions are unique methods of communication that echo the principal goal of 21_21 Design Sight: to address everyday themes and suggest new ways of looking at and understanding the world around us.
This program, which focuses on the creative driving force behind these traditional performance arts incorporates art direction (including set design) by graphic designer Issay Kitagawa, whose show "Lucky Luck Show by Issay Kitagawa" will constitute a part of the program. A selection of up-and-coming young designers will also be responsible for the program's costumes, adding a new perspective to the traditional performance.
Programs for which advanced bookings are required include kyogen by the Shigeyama Kyogenkai, rakugo by Kobeicho Katsura and Karoku Yanagiya, and the highly satirical one-man shows of Issey Ogata, a modern translation of kyogen or rakugo. Program I was created with children in mind, and II, with adults, although both are meant to be enjoyed by adults and children alike, making them a perfect summer vacation activity.
