Naritaka Sato
This is an exhibition featuring works by Naritaka Sato, grand prize winner of the 8th Spiral Independent Creators Festival (SICF) held in May 2007.

In the SICF exhibition, Sato showed photo-realistic, slightly distorted portrait paintings that emit an unsettling sensation. Many viewers stopped and stared at his pieces which lie somewhere between painting and photography, and the ambiguous space between reality and representation struck the jurors as particularly engaging.

In this exhibition entitled "Neutral Gray", three new large-scale paintings based on images of babies and high school girls are on display. The tile hints at the "gray area" where things are unsure and ambiguous.

"I am conscious of finding unity and balance through a dichotomy which appears between photography and painting, reality and illusion, and artificiality and nature. Fusing elements found in both, or neither of these conceptions, I visualize uncertainty and ambiguity in my work. Using images of a baby and a high school girl which are powerful and energetic, I aim to emphasize this sense of discomfort through my work," says Sato. His work gives us a chance to revisit the reality that surrounds us by seeing it from a different viewpoint.
