Tokyo Wonder Site (TWS) has been focusing on supporting emerging artists through “Tokyo Wonder Wall” (TWW), a public art competition, since 2000, and and an emerging artists support program. TWS Emerging gives a solo exhibition for TWW awardees to further develop their presentational skills. From last year’s TWW awardees, TWS will introduce 23 artists from June till March, 2008.
This is the third exhibition of this series this year. Egi says that for him, the feeling of drawing one line is the feeling of living itself. His paintings are not colored flatly, but with carved individual pencil and crayon lines. His motifs are of boars and deers that he has encountered in parts of his Tokyo home, where nature still exists.
Goto has continued to draw her heroes. When she was young, they were manga heroes, but now it is her grandmother's older brother who died during World War II. He didn't accomplish any great feat and yet her thoughts are with this relative of hers who lived sparingly with all his might in a totally different time from now. She paints to awaken the feeling and energy of being "alive" in modern society where the abundance of things and information can make it hard to feel happiness.
