Duncan Mountford "A Sense of Wonder and the Problem of Knowledge"

The mechanism isolates the image of the object, removing all clues of scale and origin. It is as much part of what is seen as the image, the whole is the context in which the trace of something is seen.

In a museum objects are isolated from the context, and the world is seen as if the observer and the collector are apart from it. Objects are viewed dispassionately, placed in taxonomic orders, assigned a place in the order of things.

Yet when we view something we can be overwhelmed by a sense of wonder, of curiosity, that may well not be satisfied by mere recognition of the place of that thing in the objective world view we have constructed. Memories, myths, stories, mis-readings and uncertainty play at the edge of our vision.
