Keiko Kanma
This Exhibition, "Smoke and the Maiden" brings together Keiko Kanma's paintings from three separate series.

The title of the first series "Cloud, Smoke and Blast―The Great World 'Rule' way," is a play on J.M.W. Turner's Painting "Rain, Steam and Speed―The Great Western Railway," which was displayed at the National Academy of London in 1844. This series of oil paintings and drawings presents the smoke of the disasters at Nagasaki, 9/11, and the war in Iraq. These are linked to the invention of the steam engine, which made the industrial revolution possible.

Another series, "The Eyes of the Maiden" takes the illustration style of girls' manga as a motif.

The final series, "The Spam Beauties," presents the kind of images of anonymous women that arrive in our inboxes attached to spam e-mail on a daily basis.

While these three series deal with serious themes, they are not dogmatic. Kanma displays great skills as an artists, and these works successfully present the "aura" of our times.
