Erina Matsui
Erina Matsui creates self portraits that you cannot easily forget once you see them. She has been featured in many articles after winning a first prize with a painting entitled "I Love Ebi-Chili" in a competition held at her college preparatory school in 2003. The same piece won a golden prize at Geisai #6, which led her to be included in a group exhibition at the Fondation Cartier and the piece was purchased by the foundation. While this Cinderella story has been told over years, this is going to be her first solo exhibition.

Matsui's self portraits incorporate seemingly irrelevant motifs such as toys, cosmos, mushrooms and such. Including herself, all the motifs are depicted as if they are something other than themselves, leaving powerful impressions to viewers.

Matsui's paintings interact with viewers and ultimately invite them to her world. Among many artists who paints self portraits, she uniquely pursues possibilities in self portraiture methods.
