Naoko Majima
Majima was born in Aichi prefecture in 1944. Since the early 1980s, she has continuously created ghastly and frightening, yet beautiful pencil drawings and objet d’art with her own unique style. In 2006, she had two grand-scale solo exhibitions: one at the Aomori Contemporary Art Centre and the other at the Aichi Prefectural Museum of Art. This summer she participated in a memorable exhibition titled “The Reality of Nine Contemporary Artists” at the Yokosuka Museum of Art. She is one of the most flourishing contemporary artists.

In this exhibition “In the Dense Forest,” Majima presents pencil drawings and objet d’art that are sublimated with her way of looking at the world. The primitive wildness of the dense forest is a mystery zone where humans cannot intrude. In that untrodden field, Majima draws images of living creatures that are far richer than the real world we live in. She pursues the maternal force of life.

After the exhibition at Yokosuka Museum of Art, Majima began creating humanoid objet d’art. Her work has changed from the symbolic to the vibrantly spiritual. Her new work is made with colorful clothes and threads, and sometimes with common materials from her daily life. The figure has an astonishingly huge head. Its eyes are protrudent, and its tongue (or nose) is long, like a snake. It looks bizarre and off-balance.

This new humanoid objet d’art was born as a result of the intermingling of Majima’s unutterable, multi-directional distrust towards the contemporary world and her imagination of a creature that lives in the untrodden field.
