This event has ended.

The National Research Institute for Cultural Properties, Tokyo currently holds 288 sketches by Seiki Kuroda, ranging from the time he studied European painting in France to his later years.

Of particular importance are the 120 charcoal portraits, which reflect Kuroda's enthusiasm for learning Western painting techniques. They also act as a record of what academic training for painting was like in France at the end of the 19th century.

A selection of these sketches have been shown in an annual exhibition with museums from other regions for the past few years. This time, they will be displayed on the second floor of the Kuroda Memorial Hall as a special exhibition.
