"Representation of the World: Otto Neurath and His Era" Exhibition

Musashino Art University Museum & Library
Finished
Otto Neurath is known for developing and spreading the concept of the "Isotype," a visual system of pictograms, maps and graphics, 80 years ago. However, little was known about Neurath himself until recently.Born in Vienna, Neurath started his career as a sociologist and was appointed president of the Central Economic Administration under the Marxist government of Bavaria in the postwar period. However, due to the collapse of the government, Neurath was arrested and imprisoned. After being released, he formed an organization called the "Austria Housing District Residential Construction Guild." He also became a director of the Social and Economic Museum, which was a new type of educational museum aiming to stimulate citizens' social awareness. What was needed to accomplish his vision was this new pictographic communication system, Isotype. Modeled on "Orbis Pictus" by Comenius and "Encyclopedia" by Jean le Rond d'Alembert and Denis Diderot, Neurath worked on the "International Encyclopedia of Unified Science," incorporating Isotype. He was also a central figure of the Vienna Circle, a philosophical group based on the idea of logical positivism. Neurath's visual system, Isotype, greatly influenced Bauhaus and Russian Constructivism, and even fields of architecture and urban development. He was invited to attend "CIAM," a modern architecture international conference led by Le Corbusier, to discuss ideas on visualizing and analyzing various aspects of the urban city. His achievements have indirectly influenced Japanese creators such as Kenzo Tange. This exhibition introduces works by Neurath from three points of view.
