This event has ended.
At National Film Center
Media: Film
India, a multilingual and multi-ethnic country, has attained remarkable economic growth in recent years, and the Indian film industry is known to be the world's largest. Mumbai is the central city of the Indian cinema industry, which is also known as Bollywood. Many films have been exported to other countries today, while the history of Indian film goes far back in history.
Each area in India has developed a significant and competitive cinema scene: the Mumbai-based Hindi-language film industry led by the extraordinarily talented Raj Kapoor and the legendary director Guru Dutt; Bengal, the eastern region, where world renowned filmmaker Satyajit Ray was from; the Kerala-based Malayalam-language film industry where director Govindan Aravindan produced his unique films; and the Tamil-language films from the southern region, in which alluring entertainment aspects and a distinctive cultural influence coexist.
Also, the genres and themes of Indian film cover a wide range, from entertaining movies packed with songs, dances, and love stories, to culturally and socially engaged films.
In celebration of Japan-India Friendship Year, this screening event features a total of 32 masterpieces from India created before the 1980s.
