"Shanghai Modern Art" Exhibition

The Shoto Museum of Art
Finished
The Republic of China was established in 1912, replacing the Qing Dynasty which lasted almost 2000 years. In the midst of this social change, the modern art movement started to evolve among those who pursued restructuring traditional culture. Shanghai opened its seaports after the Opium War and became the center of economic and cultural exchange, attracting many artists from all over China. This also fostered cultural exchange between China and Japan, and many Chinese artists visited Japan to study art.

Including many works that are on view for the fist time in Japan, this exhibition features around 200 paintings, calligraphy, and Tenkoku prints which deal with motifs of flowers, birds, human figures, and landscapes.
